As the most romantic day of the year approaches, florists everywhere work overtime to handcraft the perfect arrangement for the hopeful bachelor, the long-time sweethearts, and everyone else in between.
While the history and meaning of Valentine’s Day is topic for debate, one thing is certain: roses are the universal symbol of love and romance. Experts estimate 224 million roses will be sold on Valentine’s Day, with over half of them being red. Although roses tend to spark notions of love and adoration, many people are unaware of their therapeutic benefits.
When steam distilled, rose petals create an essential oil, a centuries-old treatment for a variety of health and beauty conditions. Applied topically, rose oil can fight acne, balance hormones, relieve anxiety and depression, reduce rosacea, and naturally increase libido.
This Valentine’s Day, reap the benefits of roses through a soothing bath comprised of Essential Oil infused bath salts. It lends itself the perfect Valentine’s Day gift or a spa-like treat for yourself, because hey – you deserve it.
Ingredients
- Rose Essential Oil
- 2-3 roses (dried)
- 2 cups Epsom Salt
- Epsom Salt reduces inflammation, eases pain and muscle cramps, flushes toxins, promotes magnesium absorption into the skin, and more.
- 3/4 cup baking soda
- Baking soda softens and brightens your skin.
Directions
- Pluck the petals off your roses (I used roses from a wilting bouquet).
- Set the petals aside and allow them to dry out overnight.
- The next day, whisk together the Epsom Salt and baking soda.
- Add about 15-20 drops of essential oil to the bowl (results may vary depending on how strong you prefer the fragrance of your bath salt).
- As you stir, you may notice your salt turn yellow – that is fine. As you continue to mix, the salt will return to its white color.
- Use a knife or your hands to shred the dried rose petals.
- Combine the petals to your salt mixture.
- Store in a sealed container.
